Sophomore Year

The year that shocked the world...

Going into sophomore year, I was motivated and ready to compete. I trained over the summer in the hurdles and javelin and was ready to set new personal records in these events. Like last year, fall training was intense but necessary. We also had to transition into having a new coach, so this was a new challenge to begin the year.

Adapting to a new coach can be hard because every coach has different training techniques. The multi's coach that was hired was very knowledgeable in his field. Practice as a multi was completely different than practice as a sprinter. We had to cover seven events each week, so we would practice about two events per day all while maintaining our sprinting endurance. As exhausting as our training was, I really enjoyed learning more from our coach and seeing the progress in each of my events.

Leading up to our indoor conference my teammates and I were very excited. Our team was well-rounded in all of the areas, sprints, multis, jumps, and throws. The team was bringing a new level to our conference. At our 2021 Indoor conference, I placed 4th in the pentathlon and broke the school record. Being able to come away with 4th place boosted my confidence and brought reassurance that switching events was the right decision. Placing 4th also motivated me to do better for our outdoor conference.

Training continued once we returned from the conference meet and the outdoor competition began in March. Since our season is during the spring we typically do not get a spring break off and we normally have a meet the week of. This week changed everybody's life. When covid hit, the whole world went into quarantine. It was insane looking back at it. Once covid hit everyone was sent home and our season ended.  I remember going home and not knowing if I will ever be able to run again. I was filled with sadness, but I was hopeful that things would get better. With protocols set in place, we were able to return to campus for my junior year and we were able to start training.

  1. Covid was definitely a bummer, definitely a time for self-reassessment.
