Things with covid were still pretty rough and in order for us to return to campus intense protocols were put in place. Covid caused a lot of changes in a lot of people's life. It caused the 2020 Tokoyo Olympics to be postponed to 2021. This was one of the most memorable things that happened during that time because those Olympic athletes train their whole life to make that Olympic team. Our coach was training two professional athletes who were training for the Olympic trials, so I was able to observe the effect that covid had on their own plans.
Social distancing in practice
Once we returned to the track, it was hard. It was hard because of the number of protocols that we had to follow. For example, we were required to get a covid test pretty often, we had to be 6 feet apart at practices and we were only allowed to go to the track and weights. The hardest part of my junior year was taking it day by day. With covid being new, everyone adapting to this virus, and new CDC guidelines being released our covid protocols could change at any minute, so making sure that we were adaptable during this time was key to having a successful season. There were times when we could not practice because of exposure to covid. It was a very hard year, but once we were a couple months in things began to get better.
Due to covid, we were unable to compete during the indoor season. We trained through those months preparing for the outdoor season, but life doesn't always go as planned. I was prepared to set new PRs (personal records) and compete in the heptathlon again at the outdoor championship. Unfortunately, I was injured during one of my training sessions in December. This threw a major curveball in my junior season.
After getting the imaging done, I found out that I needed an ACL repair. This meant that my outdoor season was put on hold. Since I did not compete last season, due to covid I was so excited for my junior year, so finding out this news was devastating. I began the process of scheduling my surgeries, so I would be ready to return next season.
